Ask ten Singapore homeowners how they deal with afternoon heat and most will point at their curtains. Blackout curtains, day curtains, roller blinds, sometimes all three layered on the same window. Yet the living room still hits 33°C by 4pm and the aircon runs flat out until dinner. The reason is simple physics: curtains and blinds intercept sunlight after it has already passed through the glass and entered the room. Solar film stops most of that heat at the glass, before it gets in. The two are not really rivals (they solve different problems), but if your goal is a cooler home, it helps to understand exactly what each one does and does not do.
Where the heat actually enters
Solar heat arrives through your windows in three forms: visible light, infrared radiation, and ultraviolet. Plain glass lets almost all of it through. Once that energy is inside, it gets absorbed by your floor, sofa, walls, and by the curtain fabric itself, then re-radiated as heat into the room. A dark blackout curtain in direct sun can become noticeably warm to the touch. It has essentially become a radiator hanging inside your home, with the trapped hot air rising off it into the room.
A spectrally selective solar film works on the other side of that equation. Our solar window films are nano-ceramic and reject 90% of infrared radiation at 1400nm and block 99% of UV up to 420nm, so a large share of the sun's energy never enters the room in the first place. Two rows in that table deserve emphasis. First, daylight and view: to get any meaningful heat reduction from curtains, you have to draw them, which means living in a dim room with the lights on at 2pm. Film works with the curtains open. Second, the "works when you are not home" row: fabric only protects your furniture while it is drawn, and most people are out during the hours the sun is strongest.
The fading problem nobody warns you about
UV and visible light degrade the dyes and finishes in almost everything you own. Timber and vinyl flooring near windows yellows or bleaches within two to three years. Fabric sofas fade unevenly, leaving a visible line where the cushion meets the armrest. Books, artwork, and even kitchen cabinetry laminates lose colour. In a west-facing unit this happens fast. Curtains only prevent this while drawn. Solar film's SpectraGuard 420 technology blocks 99% of UV up to 420nm and cuts up to 70% of HEV blue light (the wavelengths most responsible for fading) 24 hours a day, whether you are home or not. If you have just renovated or bought new furniture, this is arguably the single strongest argument for film. Protection that depends on you remembering to close the curtains is not really protection.
Where curtains and blinds still win
To be fair to fabric: film cannot do everything.
- Night privacy. A standard solar film does not stop people seeing in at night when your lights are on. Curtains do this perfectly. (For daytime one-way privacy or frosted glass effects, that is what privacy window film is for: a different product for a different job.)
- Full blackout. Shift workers and light-sensitive sleepers need blackout curtains. Even our darkest film, Solar20, still admits 20% of visible light. That is deliberate, because it is designed to keep your view.
- Softness and styling. Curtains frame a room. No film will do that.
So the honest answer is not "film instead of curtains". It is film plus lighter curtains. Once film is handling the heat and UV at the glass, you no longer need heavy blackout fabric doing thermal duty. What this looks like in practice
A typical setup we recommend: Solar70 (70% VLT) on north- or east-facing living room windows where glare is mild, Solar40 on the main sun-facing elevation, and Solar20 (64.4% TSER) on badly hit west-facing bedrooms. Keep or add curtains purely for night privacy and sleep darkness. FAQ
Does solar film mean I can get rid of my curtains?
Not entirely. Film handles heat, UV and glare far better than fabric, but it does not give you night privacy or full blackout. Most homeowners keep a lighter set of curtains for evenings and downgrade from heavy blackout fabric. The two work best together.
Do blackout curtains actually reduce heat?
They reduce glare and block light, but the heat has already passed through the glass before it reaches the fabric. The curtain absorbs that energy and re-radiates much of it into the room, and hot air pools between curtain and window. You will feel some benefit, but far less than stopping the energy at the glass.
Will solar film make my home dark like tinted car windows?
No, unless you choose it to. Solar70 keeps 70% of visible light (most visitors cannot tell it is installed) while still rejecting 45.4% of solar energy. Darker options exist for harsher exposures, but even Solar20 keeps your view, which no drawn curtain can do.
How long does each option last?
